Philodendron Tortum is one of the most dramatically unusual and visually arresting philodendrons available — its leaves are so deeply and intricately divided that each one resembles an outstretched hand of skeletal, elongated fingers, creating a lacy, architectural quality unlike any other houseplant. Fast-growing and vigorous, it adds an instantly exotic, jungle-inspired energy to any space it inhabits. A true collector's plant that rewards with increasingly spectacular foliage as it matures — once you see it in person, it's impossible to forget.

Fern-leaf Philodendron Care Guide

Bright, indirect light is ideal for maintaining vigorous growth and the intricate leaf form this plant is celebrated for. An east or west-facing window works well. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the delicate, deeply divided leaves, and avoid very low light which will significantly slow growth and reduce the dramatic leaf dissection.

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, typically every 7–10 days. Use a well-draining aroid mix and a pot with good drainage. Never allow the plant to sit in standing water. Like all philodendrons it is more tolerant of slight underwatering than overwatering.

Prefers humidity of 50–70%. While it tolerates average household humidity, boosting moisture levels with a humidifier or pebble tray encourages faster growth and more dramatically divided leaves. A moss pole for support also helps the plant reach its full potential as it climbs and matures.

Thrives in warm, consistent indoor temperatures. Avoid temperatures below 60°F and keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents. Consistent warmth encourages the vigorous growth and increasingly dramatic leaf dissection this plant develops as it matures.

A tropical plant suited for outdoor growing only in frost-free Zones 9–11. In all other climates it is grown as a year-round houseplant. Can be placed outdoors in a shaded spot during warm summer months as long as temperatures remain above 60°F.

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Higher nitrogen formulas support the vigorous foliage growth this plant is known for. Our Instant Plant Food makes monthly feeding simple — just add to your watering can once a month. Reduce in fall and pause through winter.

Repot each spring into a container 1–2 inches larger using a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Provide a moss pole or trellis to support the climbing growth habit and encourage larger, more dramatic leaf development. Water well after repotting and keep in bright indirect light while adjusting.

Due to the deeply divided nature of the leaves, dust can accumulate in the narrow leaf sections — a gentle rinse in a lukewarm shower is the most effective cleaning method monthly. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves at the base as needed. Inspect regularly for spider mites and thrips which can hide within the intricate leaf structure.

Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one leaf and place in water or moist sphagnum moss in a warm, bright location. Roots typically develop within 3–5 weeks. For air layering, wound a healthy stem at a node, pack with damp sphagnum moss, wrap in plastic, and pot up once robust roots are visible.
