Monstera Burle Marx is a rare and captivating member of the monstera family that brings a more delicate, refined take on the bold tropical aesthetic its relatives are famous for. Its elongated, lanced-shaped leaves develop beautiful natural perforations as the plant matures, creating an intricate, architectural quality that feels both exotic and elegant. Named after the legendary Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, this is a collector's plant with genuine visual sophistication — a wonderful find for anyone looking to expand beyond the familiar and into something truly special.

Monstera Burle Marx Care Guide

Bright, indirect light is ideal for encouraging the best leaf development and fenestration. An east or west-facing window works well. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the foliage, and avoid very low light which will slow growth and reduce the characteristic leaf perforations that make this plant so distinctive.

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, typically every 7–10 days. Use a well-draining potting mix and always ensure the pot has drainage holes. Never allow the plant to sit in standing water, which can quickly lead to root rot. Reduce watering frequency in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

Prefers moderate to higher humidity of 50–70%, reflecting its tropical rainforest origins. Average household humidity is tolerated but boosting ambient moisture with a humidifier or pebble tray will encourage larger, more fenestrated leaves and faster overall growth.

Thrives in warm, stable indoor temperatures consistent with its tropical origins. Avoid temperatures below 60°F and keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and exterior windows in winter. Consistent warmth encourages the steady growth and fenestration development this plant is prized for.

A tropical species suited for outdoor growing only in frost-free Zones 10–12. In all other climates it is grown as a year-round houseplant. Its adaptability to typical indoor conditions makes it a reliable and rewarding addition to any indoor plant collection.

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Our Instant Plant Food makes monthly feeding effortless — simply add to your watering can once a month. Reduce in fall and pause through winter.

Repot each spring into a container 1–2 inches larger using a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. A moss pole or trellis for support encourages larger, more fenestrated leaves. Water well after repotting and keep in bright indirect light while adjusting.

Wipe leaves with a soft damp cloth monthly to remove dust and keep the foliage looking vibrant. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves at the base as needed. Inspect regularly for common pests including spider mites and thrips.

Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one leaf and place in water or moist sphagnum moss in a warm, bright location. Roots typically develop within 3–5 weeks. For air layering, wound a healthy stem at a node, pack with damp sphagnum moss, wrap in plastic, and pot up once robust roots are visible.
